I have gained an insane amount of knowledge over these last few months as I’ve been setting up my online business.  Sometimes it’s still astounding to me to think about how far I’ve come in what is relatively a short period of time. In a recent newsletter email that was sent out to my subscribers, I wrote about having the idea to travel back in time to have a conversation with myself of six or eight months ago, back when I first started this online business journey. Oh, the things I could share with my past self.

Actually, I’ve had this idea before, for a book I’m currently working on.  I had the idea to go back in time and talk to myself, back when I was still in school, about everything I learned in private practice and patient care.  If I could write to myself, to the Lauren that was still in school, and give her an insight to the experiences and situations I would face after I graduated, I often wonder how different my life would be, or if I still would have made the same decisions I made.  Would I have still gone down the same path had I given myself a “heads up?”  I still plan to author this book one day from that perspective, but for now, let’s just table that thought.

So why the idea to start writing my blogs from this perspective?

For starters, I’m a fantastic conversationalist, especially if I’m only talking to myself (just kidding… or am I?) I’m rarely argumentative, and let’s just call it like it is: I do tend to come up with phenomenal ideas.  I’m simply a delight.

In all seriousness, I have often had the thought about the things I would say if I could talk to my past self, after having gained the information and experiences from these last few months.

If you remember, the purpose of my blog was to document my journey as I created and launched my online business.  I know there are many out there like I was, who want to start this journey but aren’t entirely sure where to start, or where to receive ongoing guidance. It’s been a journey, undoubtedly, and truth be told, I didn’t realize that going into it.  I’m not regretful by any means, I was simply naive.

At the end of documenting my journey, I’ll have a documented blueprint of my entire process, including all the successes as well as the failures.  Unfortunately, some of the topics along this journey are what I would refer to as “dry,” or flat-out boring.   Although they are very important aspects to my online business, they may not be the most entertaining to read, and they’re certainly not the most enjoyable to write about.  So that’s where the idea to write to myself came into play.  How would I have a conversation with myself about these topics?

So here goes nothin’, wish me luck:

Lauren,

I want to talk to you about Affiliate System and you’re going to want to pay close attention to this.  In fact, take notes because it’s really that important.

What I’m about to share with you isn’t going to sound exciting to you, perhaps not right now, but this Affiliate System thing is going to turn out to be one of the most important aspects of your business. Think of this as the “motherboard” of your business, or since you like chiropractic puns so much, the backbone of your business.

Not only are you going to use Affiliate System in a large capacity for almost all of your business needs, you’re also on a path currently to learn the program enough to be able to teach and train others of it’s capabilities in the future.

You’re going to test drive several platforms before being introduced to Affiliate System. You’re going to find yourself in the perfect place at the perfect time, meaning when you join Dean’s coaching program, Internet Profits, he will launch his new flagship platform Affiliate System to their Certified Partners (you), giving you private and pre-launch access.  I don’t want to say the timing of this was a God-thing, but it was totally a God-thing.

With the private access to Affiliate System, myself and other Certified Partners received step-by-step training called the Beginner’s Advantage, which showed us how to set up the back end of our businesses, starting with setting up our domains, linking those domains to our WordPress blogs, and setting up our WordPress blogs.  Eventually the training focused on setting up your funnel system and allowing you to capture an interested audience onto your email newsletter list.

I would have never figured out the technical aspects of setting up my online business had it not been for the step-by-step training in the Beginner's Advantage.

I don’t know what the percentage of affiliate marketers out there that aren’t setting up their system this way, but I would imagine its a very low percentage. The system that you have effectively and successfully set up is something that resembles what other successful, small to medium sized businesses (even those outside of affiliate marketing) that they likely paid well into the thousands of dollars to create.  You now not only have your back end system set up and functioning like a well-oiled machine, you now know how to do it for whatever business you choose to create in the future.  The ideas and possibilities for future business just went through the rough. And trust me, we will be creating many more businesses now that we have this tool at our disposal.

One thing you’re going to learn is the term, CRM, or Customer Relationship Management. This is the type of program, or platform, that Affiliate System is, allowing you, the affiliate marketer, to house everything you need for your online business all in one place.  You will learn that there are many different tools recommended to do affiliate marketing, all of which can be acquired individually.  While that works perfectly fine, it is preferable to house all of those tools in one place,  integrated with one another.  My personal opinion is that there’s something to be said for minimizing the glitches that may occur by trying to link multiple programs or tools with one another. I can pay one fee each month and that will include all I need for my business.

I don’t want to overwhelm you by going over all the capabilities that Affiliate System has to offer, however, I do feel giving you some of the main highlights will be helpful. To be honest, although I know the system decently well at this point, I still have probably only scratched the surface of its capabilities.

Affiliate System allows you to host an infinite amount of domains on the platform as well as one WordPress domain.  You’ll grow to learn the importance of having a website, and in particular a blog website, as a primary component to your business. Before Affiliate System, your first experience creating a website left you very disappointed and dissatisfied with the end product.  You’ll eventually come to the conclusion that a WordPress website is indeed the way to go but you’re going to need help setting it up.  The solution you will find to this is answered in the Beginner’s Advantage training.  The training walks you through step-by-step how to set up your WordPress site, and in no time you’re up and running.  Creating your blog website in WordPress will give you the best functional and aesthetically-pleasing website you can create. It was worth the painful beginning!

Funnels are all the rage these days.  All the cool kids are creating them.  You will grow to learn that a click funnel, or more simply referred to as a funnel, is a mini one-page website (or multiple one-page websites linked together) to help capture email addresses that will then distribute to your email list. These funnels will offer a lead magnet, or a free gift or training of value (an ebook, training, tutorial, etc.) You’ve seen these funnels time and time again, and even purchased items from them. It wasn’t until you dove into affiliate marketing and started learning about the tools did you really understand the purpose or how they functioned. After you conquer setting up your WordPress website, setting up your funnel page will be a breeze. The more complicated component to this will be linking your funnel to your blog, and automating it so the proper emails are sent to the subscriber upon initiation. Again, I can’t emphasize enough that setting up a properly working funnel and integrating it into your system would not be possible without the Beginner’s Advantage step-by-step training.

For now, I’ve have kept the funnel learning to a minimum.  Outside of the tutorials available in the Beginner’s Advantage training, I haven’t tried anything too fancy at this point.  I imagine in the future I will explore my funnel capabilities a bit more but for now, I’m fine where I am.

Early on you will start learning the importance of growing your email list for your online business.  The idea of creating an email list makes sense, but how to capture that list will be the never-ending quest you will set out to perfect.  As with almost all affiliate marketing, list building is understood as a very important component to your business but the secret lies in the sauce of just how to get those people on to your list.  I’ll share more about this in our future talks but for now, just know that this is very important.  Affiliate System houses your email list and effectively integrates your list with your email marketing.

Email marketing is perhaps the primary component to most online businesses, and should be to any affiliate marketer. Most CRM platforms are centered around this tool; however, they don’t always include the other capabilities that I’m outlining in this list.

Sure, some platforms are better than others.  You will briefly experience some of these other platforms before being introduced to Affiliate System.

You’re going to grow to learn more about email marketing than you ever thought was possible.  You’ll grow to understand the importance of setting up an automated sequence of emails, and you’ll grow to understand the difference between an automated email and a broadcast email.  And then, just after you think you have it all figured out, you’ll start learning about setting up your email workflow.

When it comes to communicating with your email list, those people that have requested to join your world and want to read emails from you, you will want to to incorporate a series of automatically sent emails to your subscribers.  You’ll be able to draft up a series of emails that will be sent to your subscriber list.  This not only saves time by automatically accomplishing this task for you, but it maintains consistency in your communication that you don’t have to manually track.  You’ll grow to learn that as your email list grows, communicating with individually sent emails is something that becomes very unrealistic.  An automated email tool accomplishes this task for you.  Of course it takes a little time to set it up properly, but once it’s set up it will run on it’s own until you inform it to stop.

Of course you can still send out individual emails as well, you’ll call those broadcast emails.  Sometimes when you have something timely to say, or an update you want to share with your subscribers, you can send out a manual email to your entire list, should you so choose.

And then as you further start playing around with your email automation system, you’ll start to learn about Workflows. This is where you can get quite fancy with your capabilities, setting up automated prompts to carry out a wide array of actions. Aside from a very basic workflow, I have yet to dive into this too deeply.  I can appreciate, though, that the capability exists for when I am confident enough to venture down that path.

I know you’re familiar with linktree from your previous business days, but never in a million years would I have expected that capability to be included in Affiliate System.  A linktree is a one page, easy to create, mobile-compatible page that allows you to list all your social and website links all in one place.  Since you will be starting your customer journey on social media, creating just one link that hosts all your other links will be extremely beneficial to your audience by providing a lot of options where they can pursue the next step with you. They may wish to visit your other social channels, or visit your blog, either way, all the links are located in one location.

In full disclosure I haven’t played in this sandbox yet, but I know I’m going to thoroughly enjoy it when I do!  Affiliate System provides a section within the platform that integrates all of your social channels and allows you to plan and post content from one location.  I also understand it has capabilities to track and post certain social ad campaigns as well.  Again, like with many other tools, this is something that I would have purchased for my business as a one-off tool, never thinking it would be something offered in Affiliate System.  I’m not quite familiar with this tool yet, but I’ve been hearing some of my colleagues discuss their experience with it, and so far it’s only been positive.  I’m looking forward to playing in here soon.

I know after this talk you might find this a little overwhelming, but let me reassure you that you’ll grow to love this in due time!  You’re going to have a blast creating your online content and perfecting the creation of your online business.  I would recommend you take your journey step-by-step and not try to learn everything in one day.  You will start small but will continue to expanding your knowledge little by little, and before you know it, you’ll be teaching others!

Okay, enough of this work chat, let’s go get a lemon blueberry martini.  It’s 5 o’clock somewhere…

Thank you Steve! I always value your feedback. To answer your question: no, I’ve never thought to write to my future self. This intrigues me… I think I’m going to have to try it!

  2. Lauren, WOW! Another brilliant post. I love the concept of talking to yourself and sharing what you will be accomplishing in the future. Very clever and insightful. You have done it again! I don’t think you left anything out. Thank you so much for your interpretation and explanation of a program that will surely be successful for many marketers and future entrepreneurs.

Thank you Vanessa! I’m so very glad you enjoyed this. Like you, I’m hoping this will be a beneficial explanation of Affiliate System for future users.

I know talking to my future self about the successes I am and will achieve is a wonderful exercise in the Law Of Attraction. Gratitude for what has yet to be accomplished is a meditation Dr Joe Dispenza teaches. These words are real.

And we’ve accomplished so much in a short time. The help we’ve gotten is given graciously and generously from Dean and his team. And from one another!

    1. Lauren Millman

Kate, it’s interesting you bring up Dr. Joe Dispenza. Did you know he is not only a chiropractor but he attended my alma mater? We both trained at Life University. I have heard him speak many times, wonderful and insightful man.

I love this; another amazing blog post. I am always telling myself that if I could go back in time with the knowledge I have now, there would be no stopping me! Reflecting on where you were 6 or 8 months ago provides great reflection and knowledge. This is a great lesson, and when we start teaching affiliate systems to others and share the bells and whistles to help others build their businesses and dream lives, it will be so nice to reflect on the process, and it will be important to remember how it felt as beginners starting out!

    1. Lauren Millman

I couldn’t have said it better myself, Alison! I think there will come a point that documenting all of the steps in the beginning of this journey will turn out to be quite beneficial here in the next few months. I’m glad you enjoyed it!

  5. I love the idea of writing to your past self. Documenting all that you’ve achieved must have felt good! You’ve done incredibly well. I love reading your blogs, they bring me so much value.

I’ve signed up to your newsletter, the e-book is AMAZING!!!

    1. Lauren Millman

Sarah, I’m SO glad you enjoy my blog. I’m glad you received the e-book. I thoroughly enjoyed creating that!

  6. Hi Lauren,
Oh I sure hope that your past Lauren really listens to what you have to say! LOL! Great information and definitely worth listening to.
If we could go back in time and talk to our younger self…. My only question is thinking if he’d listen to what I’d have to tell young Marc about the future or if he’d just brush it off as hogwash!
I’d definitely love to read that book of yours when you publish it; I’m sure it would make for some great reading as well.
    All the best!

    1. Lauren Millman

Marc, in all seriousness, knowing my past self, there is a 99.99% chance that even if I knew I was talking to my future self, I probably wouldn’t listen anyway. I was quite stubborn like that. Although much better now in my “old age,” I still maintain an essence of this stubborn trait. My past self and your past self sound like they would become great friends!
And I’ll make sure you’re one of the first people that receives my “real” book once it’s complete. 🙂

  7. There are quite a few technical aspects to affiliate marketing. It’s a bit overwhelming if I think of them all at once – I’m glad I’ve had people to guide me through these things, because I don’t think I could have ever figured out all this stuff on my own.

    1. Lauren Millman

I completely agree with you Nathan. I am certain I would not be able to do this without guidance and coaching.

  8. Lauren, I think your presentation is very innovative, Well done! Great info and guide to Affiliate Marketing. Thanks for sharing.

  9. Edmund Broadbent

This is the most comprehensive description of The Affiliate System I have come across. It really sets out the advantages of a complete one stop method which includes ful training. Well done. Keep talking.

    1. Lauren Millman

I think you may have motivated me to continue this method of writing my blogs! Thank you Edmund.

  10. Lauren,

I love your new approach to writing your blog posts. It’s a great way to wrap the content into a story format while teaching somethings that would ordinarily be dry or as you said boring.

I have been trying to find a story format that would work well for teaching concepts that are not all that exciting but necessary for success. Perhaps, put it in a conversation format between SJ and I and use parables to explain it.

Will have to give that some more thought.

Great way to approach it and look forward to more conversations with yourself.

Thank you CJ! I look forward to reading what ideas you come up with for your future blogs. I know they will be VERY informative!

  11. Lauren – I absolutely love this personal and heartfelt conversation with yourself. I have often wondered about what I would tell myself about life, love, business, what to avoid and what to grab on to for future happiness. I would definitely focus on happiness and not so much on money or success. If I am truly happy, these things will come and it not, it won’t matter so much as I will be happy. As I reflect, there would be many things I would change, but most of the experiences I have had I would take all over again. Finding my wife, having my kids, getting my dog, welcoming grandchildren, etc. Now to support those priceless treasures, I would have definitely started my online business sooner. But I cannot dwell as I have it now. So, here’s to your continued success as an adult and here’s to your younger self as she shaped you!

    1. Lauren Millman

Thank you Ernie… I love how you honored both “Lauren’s” in whatever stage she was in. I like how you put that. I’m glad you enjoyed the post!

  12. Lauren, wow! I don’t know where to start and I don’t know what to say about this blog. It’s epic. The letter that you wrote to yourself is genius and so useful in showing how far you’ve come. You’ve covered so many important parts of affiliate marketing with incredible detail and clarity. Your blog is very clean crisp and incredibly well written. I’ll be referring to this one many times. I don’t know what else to say other than Carry on it’s amazing well done. Thanks, Atif

I think I need to return the statement of “Wow!”… I believe I owe a “wow” back to you and your comment! Thank you! When I sit down each week to think about what I want to write about, it’s a gamble if it’s going to turn out engaging, beneficial, and entertaining. I’m very grateful you enjoyed it!

  13. Your idea of writing to your past self, both in your current online business and your previous experiences in private practice, is excellent.

Looking back we can see what might have been good advice to hear as a younger person before experiences teach us.

I appreciate you honestly acknowledging the less glamorous aspects of your journey, such as setting up your online business, which may not always make for the most thrilling content.

However, approaching this from the perspective of a conversation with your younger self adds a unique twist and creates engaging content.
